WTO RULES TO HEAT UP VIETNAM BANKING SECTOR

[13-01-2011] Leading financial experts have warned domestic banks that they could suffer market losses this year as Vietnam’s commitments with the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the operation of foreign banks came into effect. Foreign banks, which have become stronger in recent years, will now be operating on a level playing field with domestic banks.

HANOI INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION PLUNGES BY 14% MOM IN JANUARY 2012

[31-01-2012] Industrial Production Index of Hanoi capital in January 2012 fell by 14% and 1% on month and on year, respectively, the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Hanoi said. Of which, mining industry recorded a fall of 5.2% and 9.8% on month and on year, respectively. The processing industry posted 15% and 2.7% on month and on year decrease, respectively, the GSO said, adding that the capital’s production value plunged sharply due to long Lunar New Year holiday which fell on January and many businesses operated perfunctorily.

FOREIGN INVESTORS EYE VIETNAM’S HEALTH

GOV’T EXTENDS TIME LIMIT FOR PILOT E-CUSTOMS PROGRAM

[09-01-2012] The Government on Monday agreed to extend the time limit for the implementation of the pilot e-customs program to the end of Q2, 2012. The Ministry of Finance was assigned to coordinate with relevant agencies and localities to propose the Government to adopt legal regulations on e-customs.

INVESTMENTS IN HOTELS BRING HIGH PROFITS, BUT REQUIRE HIGH PATIENCE

HCMC: JANUARY CREDIT GROWTH +6.3%; TOTAL DEPOSITS +10% M-O-M

[01-02-2012] Total outstanding loans in Ho Chi Minh City in January, 2012, are estimated at VND812.1 trillion, up 6.3% on month and 13.6% on year, the municipal Statistics Office’s data showed. Joint-stock commercial banks’ outstanding credits are estimated at VND413 trillion, or 50.9% of total outstanding loans, up 14.2% over the same period last year.

SECOND LOW-COST CARRIER LAUNCHES MAIDEN FLIGHT

[26-12-2011] Vietnam’s second low-cost carrier VietJet Air on Sunday began its maiden passenger flight, with a plan to transport around 700,000 passengers next year. The passenger target is based on VietJet Air’s network and fleet expansion in 2012, Pritam Singh, chief operating officer of VietJet Air, told a function held on Saturday to mark the private carrier’s HCMC-Hanoi flight for 120 invited guests before the launch of its service on Sunday.

GARMENT EXPORTS TO HIT US$15 BILLION IN 2012

[16-01-2012] The garment and textile sector aims to achieve export earnings of US$15 billion in 2012, despite a predicted 15 percent fall in orders from major markets compared to last year. Chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS), Vu Duc Giang, said this year the US, EU and Japan will remain the sector’s major export markets, accounting for 80 percent of export revenues.

FDI FIRMS FACE DILEMMA OF UNSKILLED LOCAL WORKFORCE

[20-11-2011] Faced with the inadequate skills of the local workforce, many FDI companies have hesitated to expand their operation and upgrade their facilities in Vietnam, Dau Tu newspaper reported. According to a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs on the skills of Vietnamese workforce, 25 percent of the participating businesses said the local workforce was not trustworthy, failed to pay adequate attention to the work quality, and lacked communication skills.

5% INCREASE IN ELECTRICITY PRICES MAY LEAD TO 0.369% RISE IN CPI

[18-01-2012] The current 5% increase in the electricity prices will lead the consumer price index (CPI) to accelerate by 0.369%, the Minister of Finance Vuong Dinh Hue said in an online conversation this afternoon. The electricity price hike will affect CPI increase in two rounds, the minister said when answering the question of how the electricity price increase will affect CPI.

VIETNAMOBILE COMMERCIALIZES 3G SERVICE

[14-12-2011] Vietnamobile on Tuesday became the country’s final mobile operator to commercialize the third generation (3G) network service, in the context that it is now left with only half of the license to deploy the service. Vietnamobile will provide 3G services at a transmission speed of 21.6 Mbps, including web browsing, online television, video phone call, and video blogging, allowing users to upload their video clips on the web hosting of Vietnamobile at http://3g.vietnamobile.com.vn.

1.1. Gross Domestic Products (GDP) Growth
2011’s GDP was estimated growing 5.89% from 2010 and the pace was even for all the three sectors, of which it rose 5.57% in 1st Quarter; 5.68% in 2nd Quarter; 6.07% in 3rd Quarter and 6.10% in 4th Quarter. Although this year’s pace was lower than that of 6.78% in 2010, it was rather high and reasonable in the context of many difficulties in production and the country’s focused efforts in curbing inflation and stabilizing macroeconomy.
