SOCIO-ECONOMIC SITUATION IN EIGHT MONTHS OF 2016

a. Agriculture
As of August 15, the whole country cultivated 1352.0 thousand hectares of winter rice, equaling 98.9% from the same period last year, of which Northern provinces cultivated 1127.1 thousand hectares, equaling 98.6% from the same period last year; Southern localities cultivated 224.9 thousand hectares, equaling 100.4% from the same period last year.
CORE INFLATION TO RISE TO ROUGHLY 2% IN 2016
[22-08-2016] Core inflation this year could increase slightly to roughly 2 per cent from 1.7 per cent last year, the National Financial Supervisory Commission (NFSC) forecast. NFSC also forecast that the consumer price index (CPI) in 2016 will be 3.5-4 per cent if the price increase for health and education services in the last six months of the year is excluded.

As of July 15, the whole country cultivated 997.1 thousand hectares of winter rice, equaling 91.5% from the same period last year, of which Northern provinces cultivated 850.6 thousand hectares, equaling 91.8%. As of mid-July, the whole country cultivated 2094.1 thousand hectares of summer-autumn rice, equaling 100.1% against the similar period last year.

[04-07-2016] 1. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth
GDP in six beginning months of 2016 was estimated to grow by 5.52% compared to the same period last year (GDP grew by 5.48% in the first quarter; 5.55% in the second quarter), of which the sector of industry and construction rose 7.12%, contributed 2.41 percentage points to the general growth; the service sector raised by 6.35%, contributed 2.38 percentage points; only the sector of agriculture, forestry and fishery decreased by 0.18%, reduced 0.03 percentage points of the general growth.

As of May 15, localities in the North finished the cultivation of winter-spring rice, the cultivated area was estimated to reach 1155.2 thousand hectares, equaling 99.4% from the same crop last year; According to the preliminary report, the estimated winter-spring rice yield of the Northern provinces this year gained 7.1 million tons, down 53.4 thousand tons against 2015’s same crop.

As of 15 April, the country cultivated 3072.1 thousand hectares of winter-spring rice, equaling 99.3% from the same period last year, of which localities in the North cultivated 1147.6 thousand hectares, equaling 99.6%[1]; provinces in the South cultivated 1924.5 thousand hectares, equaling 99.1%.
