VIETNAM MAY HAVE 26 AIRPORTS BY 2030
Once the draft master plan on the development of the national airport network to 2030 with a vision to 2050 from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) is approved, Vietnam will have 26 airports by 2030, 14 of which will be international airports.
The number could reach 30 by 2050. Total investment for planned airports in the 2020-2030 period is estimated at approximately VND365.1 trillion ($15.87 billion), and the figure for the period of 2030-2050 would be VND866.36 trillion ($37.67 billion).
The capital will be sourced from official development assistance (ODA), the State budget, and be mobilised from loans from financial institutions and public-private partnership projects.
The government will provide incentives for aviation infrastructure investors and help them take the initiative in the mobilisation and disbursement of capital.
The priority to 2030 will be on the first phase of Long Thanh International Airport, the third terminal at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, and the expansion of Noi Bai, Danang and Cam Ranh international airports.
In 2030-2050, four new airports will be prioritised for development, including a second one in Hanoi and three others in Lai Chau city in Lai Chau province, Na San in Son La province, and Cao Bang city in Cao Bang province, all of which are in Northern Vietnam.
At present, Vietnam has 22 airports in operation, nine of which are international airports and 13 are domestic units. Seven airports are located in the north (Noi Bai, Van Don, Cat Bi, Tho Xuan, Vinh, Dien Bien, and Dong Hoi) while seven others are in the central region (Danang, Cam Ranh, Phu Bai, Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa, Pleiku, and Chu Lai). The remaining eight ones are located in the south, including Tan Son Nhat, Can Tho, Phu Quoc, Buon Ma Thuot, Lien Khuong, Rach Gia, Con Dao, and Ca Mau.
